Vitamin Injections

Vitamin B12 is required to help your body to use fat and carbohydrate for energy, make protein and DNA, and is an essential vitamin to help maintain blood, nerve cells, and neurological function.

It is a water-soluble vitamin and available as an intramuscular injectable medication called hydroxocobalamin. It is only found naturally in animal products including liver, fish, meat, eggs, dairy products, yeast extract and foods that have been fortified with B12.

    What does Vitamin B12 do?

  • Brain Function Low levels of Vitamin B12 have been linked to decline in brain function and dementia.
  • Osteoporosis (Brittle bones) There is a link between low levels of B12 and reduced bone mass, increasing the risk of fractures.
  • Depression - It has been suggested that low levels of Vitamin B12 is associated with depression and long-term treatment with B12 may reduce recurrence and severity of depression.
  • It has been shown to be beneficial in helping to:

  • Reduce fatigue (metabolises proteins, fats and carbohydrates for energy)
  • Improve mood, sleep pattern and hormone regulation
  • Improve immune system
  • Maintain healthy hair, skin and nails
  • Prevent anaemia and heart disease
  • Are there any side effects?

    B12 injections are generally safe and well tolerated. The most common side effect is pain at the injection site.

    What are the symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

    Symptoms may include:

  • Extreme tiredness and lethargy
  • Numbness and tingling in the hands and feet
  • Sore swollen tongue, Mouth ulcers
  • Muscle weakness, mobility problems, Feeling faint
  • Visual disturbances
  • Poor memory, confusion and difficulty thinking
  • Mood changes or Depression
  • Pale or yellow skin
  • Aneamoia
  • Low appetite
  • If you feel that you have these symptoms, we advise that you initially seek medical advice from your General Practitioner as they may suggest a blood test which may include checking your level of Vitamin B12.

    What does the treatment involve?

    Vitamin B12 would be administered after conducting a full consultation and medical history check with a practitioner as there are some circumstances where this treatment should be avoided.


    The vitamin is injected into the deltoid muscle in the upper arm. You may experience some mild discomfort, stinging or slight burning sensation when it is administered.


    Injected B12 begins to work immediately, but it can take days or weeks to feel the benefit. For maintenance, Vitamin B12 injections may be administered every 3 months.
